When the first rehearsals started, I was trying to find an excuse to be able to abandon this project. I remember saying to my driver "If I put my arm in the door, you close it ...". I had the need to abandon the very complicated project in which I had gotten myself.

This project went through many hands before Fassbender finally accepted the role. Leonardo DiCaprio and Cristian Bale were some of the first options of the Sony production company.
