Controversy around a new patent that Apple has released, whose function is not allow access to some functions of our device such as the camera in places where some type of specific event is taking placesuch as product presentations or concerts.
This novel patent, called «system and method for receiving infrared data with camera designed to detect images based on visible light«, Is part of a series of patents that Apple has published since 2011, and that since then, it has evolved little by little.
With it, Apple seeks protect copyright in any act that is performed, thus avoiding leaks, such as in private concerts, previewing of new movies, museums or presentations of new products. The patent was already approved several weeks ago by the United States Trademark Patent Office.
The documents presented show quite accurately and technicalities, like an iPhone or iPad camera, could be temporarily disabled when receiving a series of infrared signals, forcing the device not to access these applications for as long as the signals prevent it. This would be achieved, they say, avoid certain illegal content, helping above all the artists.
The new patent could even be used by the police, to limit that you can take photos or videos in some places or situations, such as at a demonstration, or around a public or government building.
Although this technology could also be used for less harmful reasons, and even beneficial, such as the transmission of information to a multitude of interconnected devices (as a guide in a museum, for example), I consider that it violates the freedom of the individual to use their device how and when they want. In this way, the freedom of anyone who has an iPhone in their hands is limited.
One more control method in the system if this patent manages to reach a "good" port. Fortunately, every year companies like Apple around the world patent a large number of similar technologies, but few or none are finally able to go on the market in a final product. Hopefully this is no exception.
