Months ago we anticipated you in this same page the JetDrive initiative of SSD drives that could be installed on older Macs, But at the same time they could be used as an external disk, thanks to the kit made by the brand. Well, this solution seems to have been successful, since the brand continues to evolve SSD drives with new and better features.
The improvements will be found in a higher speed in data transmission, both read as write. This gain is possible by adding more PCIe Gen3 lanes. It is a suitable solution for older computers, but these discs can later be used on newer Macs.
To date, we have the JetDrive 820/825 and are being replaced by the JetDrive 850/855. This time we have speeds reaching 1,3Gb / s. write and up to 1,6GB / s. compared to 950Mb / s in reading and writing. This increase has been possible thanks to innovation from the JetDrive team, which has placed four PCIe Gen3 lanes, when in the previous version we had two. To this innovation we must add support for the NVMe protocol.
Discs can be used on the following Macs:
- MacBook Pro Late 2013 to Early 2015
- MacBook Air from mid-2103 onwards.
- Mac mini from late 2014 onwards and current MacPro from 2013.
The operating system must be macOS High Sierra to be effective. JetDrive discs are not for sale yet, but prices will likely be € 199 for the capacity that 240GB and € 349 for the 480GB version. They will surely go on sale in the next few days.
JetDrive has thought of everything and in the packaging we have a Thunderbolt box to reuse your Mac's internal SSD drive, or other that you need. If you are interested in purchasing the box separately, its price is around € 50 to € 60. It is said that a higher memory capacity of 960GB will also be available where we can choose, for € 679 if we do not take the Thunderbolt box and € 749 in case of opting for the Thunderbolt box.
