apple 3d display

The Patent and Trademark Office released a new patent application by Apple this Thursday, titled "Spatially interactive computing device". The patent describes a advanced display system, which allows the output of the two images in 2D y 3D at the same time, without the need of special glasses.

More specifically, the screen uses multiple layers to provide different departure angles, for the viewer's left and right eyes, as well as an eye-tracking fitting, with a built-in image sensor. These technologies allow the screen produces 3D images to one user, or multiple images to different users, from simultaneously.

A summary of the patent filing:

The present description describes systems and methods for displaying a combined 2D and 3D image. A computing device can include a screen with a coating layer that allows the display of presenting 2D and 3D images, and a simultaneous combination of 2D and 3D images, with multiple images viewed (i.e., different users will see different images when looking at the same screen), and / or combinations thereof.

In the patent application, Apple provides examples of 2D / 3D visualization using a device that looks like a iPad. To get an idea of what it would look like, just look at the screen PlayStation 3Ddisplay (First picture).

We have seen a number of patents related to 3D display requested by Apple in recent years, but such technology is still under-researched. This could change in the near future, however other companies such as Microsoft y Oculus Rift, are well advanced in such investigations, which puts them ahead of Apple.

»Other companies, such as Microsoft and Oculus Rift, are very advanced in these investigations, which puts them ahead of Apple. You cannot know that. Because Apple does not launch a device every month with what it is taking out in patent does not mean that it is behind or in front of others, the idea is to have advanced technology to be able to take it out later.
