"Open with" & "Always open with this application"

FINDER

In OS X, all file types have a default application that opens when you double-click them. If we double-click on a PDF or PNG file, the Mac will most likely open "preview", Apple's default PDF viewer and image file application.

If you have installed an application like Adobe Reader, for example, you will need to give permission to set it as the default PDF application so that all PDF files will open in Abobe Reader.

Over time our preferences change, either because we want to or because we vary the programs we use for it. In addition, it may be that we want all the JPEGs to open in an application, but a specific one to open in PhotoShop. Here we show you how to deal with these two situations.

First, to change the default application with which all documents of a file type will be opened, we will simply click on a file of that type, for example, a PDF file. Then we will right-click on the file (or Control-click) and select Get information in the resulting context menu. We will look at the bottom of the information window that will open and look for the section that says "To open with:"

Now we click on the little triangle next to this section, or, if it is already open, we select the application we want to set as the default for that file type. Next, we click the button Change everything ... below that area and from then on, all files of that type will open in the application of your choice.

Now, if we want to open a specific file in a specific application, the default application is replaced for which we will simply right-click on the file and then press the key Alt keyboard. The To open with from the context menu will change to "Always open with this application", and it will allow us to choose which application we want to use to open the selected file all the time, no matter what application we have set by default.
