OS X Snow Leopard permanently loses official Apple support

snow-leopard-1

Apple ends official support for its OS X Snow Leopard operating system just as it released the latest update for the current OS X Mavericks. The quota of Macs in which this Snow Leopard operating system is installed is quite low today, we are talking about one in 5 computers still with Snow Leopard installed.

Apple decides to stop supporting after more than four years since its launch and with this it intends that users make the definitive leap to the new OS X Mavericks as long as the machine allows it. Although the new OS X Mavericks operating system is completely free for everyone, some users are still on an old OS X and Apple wants them to upgrade by gradually discontinuing support for their older operating systems.

Sure, some of these users cannot install the new version of OS X Mavericks due to hardware issues on their Mac, but the list of Mac's compatible with the latest version of OS X is quite large and includes the models:

  • iMac from mid 2007 onwards
  • MacBook from late 2008 aluminum or early 2009 onwards
  • MacBook Pro from mid to late 2007 onwards
  • Xserve since early 2009
  • MacBook Air from late 2008 onwards
  • Mac Mini from the beginning of 2009 onwards
  • Mac Pro from the beginning of 2007 onwards

Those of Cupertino are released from the operating system with a 32-bit kernel, which will surely unload them from work. Be that as it may, Apple just took this step that we are sure many users will not like it that are right now with OS X SL installed, but we have to think that this is necessary so as not to stagnate in old operating systems that gradually stop receiving support as already happened in his day with Aspyr and this same OS X.

I have an iMac from 2006 that works perfectly and I also love its matte screen (it was the last one before going to the glossy one) and now since it is not compatible with Maverick, they play! Apart from the fact that I do very well with Snow Leopard and a lot of people too (we are 20%). Pure capitalist politics, as they made a very good computer, as they did not apply programmed obsolescence, they are going to force me to buy another because they have left me unprotected. Is it that Apple do not read the news? We are in crisis and many of us are unemployed, in addition to the fact that planet Earth is not there for us to waste resources. Please, I would be very grateful if someone could find a solution for those of us who have an iMac 5,1 intel core 2 duo and are reluctant to "upgrade" a computer that we like and that has a "defect" that does not break. Thanks.
