Record sounds in OSX with Quicktime

Quicktime Player

There are many third-party applications that exist to be able to record sound on a Mac, but once again we remind you that within the apple system itself, the OSX, there are countless tools and in this case also one for sound recording.

Within OSX there is an existing application almost since the beginning of the Apple system that version after version has been improving in the way it can be handled and the things that it allows to do. This is the Quicktime Player application.

Quicktime Player is the default multimedia player that comes with OSX installed. With this small but powerful app we can record sound, record the screen of the computer itself and view video files, Among others.

Today we are going to focus on how Quicktime can record sound from computer or mic. What you have to do to be able to record an audio track with your voice is the following:

  • Open the Quicktime application found at Launchpad> OTHERS> Quicktime Player. Once open the only thing that will change is that the top menu bar on the desktop changes to the Quicktime Player menu bar.
  • Now we must tell the application what we want it to do. To do this we go to the top menu and display the File menu. Within the drop-down, the first three options are Record video, Record audio and Record screen.

  • We select, in our case, Record audio and a small window is automatically shown us with a REC symbol in which we will be able to configure how the recording will be as well as the source from which it will collect the sound. Normally, the sound is picked up by the integrated microphone, but you can perfectly have an external microphone via USB or an input line, so in such cases in the drop-down in the upper right corner, in the shape of a triangle, you will have more options to choose from.

  • All that remains is to save the file by entering File> Save. The format of the file obtained is MPEG-4 Apple Audio.
