Safari on macOS Big Sur plays 4K HDR and Dolby Vision content

Safari

Safari in the new version of macOS 11 Big Sur shows a significant amount of changes and news. One of them is the one you can read in the headline, the new version of Safari adds the option to 4K HDR and Dolby Vision content playback from Netflix on the latest Macs.

This is undoubtedly very good news for users who have a computer capable of reproducing this image quality, such as 5K iMac or even monitors capable of supporting these resolutions. Netflix has long been offering viewable 4K content on other platforms such as Apple TV 4K, but until now it was not available for Mac users due to hardware limitations.

With the new equipment and the new macOS Big Sur it seems that the doors are opening, finally these users will be able to enjoy Netflix in 4K, Dolby Vision and HDR10. In this sense, it is important to remember that not all Macs are capable of reproducing this type of content. Teams from 2018 onwards will be able to enjoy this 4K HDR, the rest will continue with the maximum resolution of 1080 for Netflix.

A few days ago we released the news about the compatibility of tvOS 14 and ‌iOS 14 with the VP9 codec of the YouTube social network, which allows the user to view 4K content from YouTube, but the codec is not yet compatible with Safari 14 on ‌macOS Big Sur‌ although it is true it will end up arriving in an update.
