Would a renewal of the iPod touch make sense today? Maybe, but not as it has been until now

A few days ago, we started to see some rumors about what an iPod touch renovation could be, because you probably already know that maybe Apple is working in the shade on this very device, and with this, many have asked the question of "What is the use of an iPod touch today?"Well, the truth is that thinking about it from the most objective point of view, the current version of it is still a version of what was once the iPhone 6.

Now, as they say, hope is the last thing you lose, and Apple may surprise us with the launch of a new iPod touch sooner rather than later, an iPod that nobody really wants, but that it's probably because we're not approaching it like we really should.

The new iPod touch might make sense, but if we forget what “iPod” has meant until now

Until now, thanks to the first meaning that was given to it, we have understood the term “iPod” as a kind of multimedia player, since it all started with music, to later make sense of videos and much more content. However, Anyone who has owned an iPod touch will agree that this is precisely its least usefulness, taking into account that having iOS as the operating system can be used for millions of other things apart from this (although of course it works excellently for it). In this way, on the iPod touch you can install any application present on iPhone and use it, but there is something that we do not realize, and that is what this 7th generation could stand out in: the world of videogames.

And, being realistic, the 6th generation of iPod touch was launched immediately, being an advance over the previous one, but a delay in terms of hardware if we take into account that it was launched with the A8 chip, a processor also present in the iPhone 6, and with that in its time you could play relatively well, but not as much as in the most recent iPhone and iPad of that time, something that could change completely with this generation.

What if the new iPod touch has the processor of the iPad and focuses on games?

There are many possibilities and rumors about what Apple could do, but something to note is that, with the beta of iOS 12.2, it was already discovered at the time that Apple could be working to launch a remastering of what was once Game Center, only with something a little special, and that is that it would have the possibility of making monthly payments in order to access a multitude of video game titles. And, with this in mind, it could be possible that the new iPod touch is geared towards video games.

And yes, although in this case the games that are available within iOS are not too powerful, they are it might be useful to see a device on which to play them exclusively, as Nintendo did a few years ago. In this case, it would have some limitations, due to the fact that it only has Wi-Fi technology, but without a doubt it can be a brilliant idea, and more if, for example, they give it all the necessary power for it, adding a processor with a power similar to that of the last iPad, which is undoubtedly spectacular.

In this way, if they finally launch a subscription to be able to play from iOS, there is no doubt that having a specific device for this could be quite a hootIt might even be a good idea to have it relatively large, and if it is with the old design without a notch, more than one will probably like it more for comfort.

The deciding factor: the price

All this would be very good, because an iPod touch that focuses on the subject of video games to give it more life can be a great idea, but there is something that Apple should take into account, and that is that you must create a device with a not too high price if you want to get more sales and users that little by little are passing to this ecosystem.

The current version of iPod touch has a price of about 230 euros in its cheapest version with 32 GB of storage, but if it is going to be especially for offline games, there is no doubt that more storage will be needed, in order to be able to install everything without having problems in this regard. In this way, many would already have 64 GB, but if so, Apple should launch more than one version with more capacities, in order to reach the maximum possible audience. For this very reason, A version close to 400 euros would be good (similar to the iPad mini), because if it has the best hardware there is no doubt that it will sell a lot.

What will Apple really do?

All this has been my personal opinion, on what I think and what I would like Apple to do, but the truth is that no one is completely clear about what is going to happen with this iPod touch, considering that it is not even known yet if they are really going to renew it or not. We have to bear in mind that this device, at least in its current version, is not selling too much, which is why they may not work so much in the seventh generation, and simply launch something similar by surprise but with some changes regarding the hardware.
