Share the Internet with your Mac iOS style

SHARE THE INTERNET WITH A MAC

Today I have seen the need to share the internet in the office of my workplace where the new iMac that we have acquired is located. As you will already know if you are a user of Apple products, it is that With iOS devices, both iPhones and iPad 4G can share the internet quickly and easily.

What you may not know is that with Mac computers we can also perform the same action, but we have to take into account certain aspects.

Both iPhones and iPads and also Macs are capable of working as WiFi access points to be able to share your data rate with other products of the company that need it at any given time. On an iPhone or iPad, we just have to go to Settings, Internet Sharing. We specify the password that we deem appropriate and activate it. At that time we will already have a WiFi network accessible from any computer or iDevice with the possibility of connecting to the Internet.

The fact is that the situation in which I have been involved today is want to share the Internet not from an iPhone or iPad 4G to a Mac, but from a Mac you have Internet via network to another MacBook Air. On a Mac we have already explained how to create a WiFi network that allows you to use certain applications when you are in a place where WiFi is not available. However, in this case I not only needed to have a WiFi, but that WiFi also had Internet to be able to connect and work in the same office with my MacBook Air.

The steps you must follow to be able to create and share a WiFi with the Internet from a Mac connected to the Internet by network cable are the following:

  • First of all we go to Finder top menu on the desktop and click on the WiFi symbol. In the menu that appears we are going to select Create network ...

CREATE WIFI NETWORK

  • A dialog box appears in which we will be able to choose the name of the network, the type of security we want and if we consider it necessary to establish a password.

BOX CREATE WIFI NETWORK

  • Once the WiFi network is created, we will see that our other Mac, in my case the MacBook Air already detects that WiFi network. However I go into Safari and it doesn't connect to the Internet. What's going on? We haven't told the team to share the internet like we do on the iPhone.
  • To share the Internet, we will System preferences and click on the Share item. In the window that appears, in the left column we must select the item Share internet.

SHARE INTERNET

From now on the Wifi that we had created will also have Internet, being able to connect any device, both Mac and iDevices.

If you do not carry out the second step, you will see that after creating the WiFi network, your computer or device detects the WiFi network, it can connect to it but it cannot connect to the Internet.

You can see that you have not done this as Creating a network is different from Internet Sharing.

One allows interaction between devices .. for example with remote. The other nope

Hi Pedro, the latest Macbook pro does not come with a port for ethernet connection, in this case how do we share the internet from that computer with an iPad? The Macbook is connected to a WIFI network.

Hi Jorge, it is assumed that if you are connected to a Wi-Fi network with your MacBook Pro you do not need to create that network from your Mac because you already have it available. In any case, for the new MacBook there are Thunderbolt adapters in the Apple stores with an ethernet connector.
