SofaPlay, an app that allows you to send videos over the network to your Smart TV

SofaPlay

If you have a significant amount of movies on your Mac or you simply tend to watch videos that you download to your Mac on the TV, SofaPlay is an interesting solution due to its simplicity and transparency. It is very light and does just what it promises, although our hardware must be compatible for correct operation.

Simple

The best thing about SofaPlay, without a doubt, is the simplicity of operation. We simply have to drag the video file that we want to see to the app window and select its destination, after which it will begin to play through the network on our TV. No strange configurations, no need to have DLNA servers running and with the only requirement that obviously our Mac is working during transmission.

The negative part is not from the app itself, but from the limitations of an application of this nature. The first recommended thing is to have the Mac and the TV connected by Ethernet in case we want to see large videos, since otherwise there may be cuts. If we use WiFi, it is highly recommended to have a router to the last (802.11n or 802.11ac) and that the TV if possible goes by Ethernet cable.

The cost of the application is 4,99 Euros, affordable for all budgets, and I think justified by the time that the app can save us. The key in any case is to have the appropriate hardware for its use, since otherwise it will not help us at all.

I find it a bit absurd to stream and have to leave the computer on, expending light on both sides, in my case I transform it to .mp4 and via airplay I see it on the apple tv, after having passed it to the ipad or the iphone before.
