The »Hand-off» functionality in Yosemite will only be available on Mac with Bluetooth 4.0 / LE

One of the functionalities that was given the most hype during the presentation of OS X Yosemite was that of »Hand-off» within what they have called Continuity, that is, leaving a job on an iOS device and continuing said work on the point where it was left in another terminal with OS X so if we are writing an email on the iPhone we can leave it in the middle and finish it on our Mac for example.

However, not everything has been a pleasant surprise but it seems that this feature is based on the latest version of the Bluetooth protocol which is none other than 4.0 or LE (Low Energy) that was first introduced in Mac in 2011 and that has been extended to the entire Mac range since then from the arrival of the last Mac Pro in late 2013.

The Apfeleimer website has published a graph showing all the Macs that will support this feature in Yosemite including in a subset all Macs that also have this version of Bluetooth:

If we leave the colors in the background, the bars show that Macs will be able to run OS X 10.10 Yosemite while on the other hand only from the color green will be the teams that can use this feature since they have the aforementioned Bluetooth protocol. In relation to iOS, the iPad 2 is the only "old" device that will be able to run iOS 8 but in which this feature cannot be used either because it does not integrate Bluetooth 4.0 and this is necessary on all computers, that is, it is not you can use one that actually has BT 4.0 while the other does not.

Still you have to remember that Yosemite is at an early stage development and we will see if in the end the option is included without the need for this version of the protocol.

Well I see it as a bad decision, that is, in an iDevice it is understood by energy consumption, but in a mac? I don't think having bluetooth activated consumes so much energy as to limit it to Mac with LE
