Does the Mac Pro have the fastest SSDs seen in a Mac?

Mac Pro 2019

One of the most successful strategies in recent years in the development of Macs has been the SSD speed who rides. These memories are not cheap at all, but the speed they offer gives them a lot of versatility.

And we're not just talking about the file transfer rate. This speed allows them in part to be a complement to certain memories such as RAM. In this sense, the Mac Pro not only would not be left behind, but it also offers the fastest SSD memory of all the Macs marketed by Apple.

Although there is no official information from Apple, write speeds of up to 3GB / s are expected. The company merely indicates that "Performance will be as fast as possible". On the other hand, for a few days we have detailed information on the performance on the Apple website in the US. With the maximum capacity of 4TB, the speed provided by the company is 2.6GB / s read and 2.7 Gb / s write.

Mac Pro SSD Configuration

They are excellent figures, but it lags behind other previously released models, even more so for a team whose price exceeds $ 6.000. However, current technology offers better transfer rates with SSD memories smaller in size. Therefore, this speed would be more related to the technological limitations compared to the configuration of the equipment by Apple.

With all this, the iMac Pro is better Mac in certain ways than the Mac Pro, for example in the configuration of the SSD, since these are somewhat faster. Nevertheless, the SSD that mount the Mac Pro is not soldered to the motherboard, which allows its change in the future. So it is upgradeable and we can improve the capacity and speed of SSDs. What we do not know is the possibility of replacing them with SSDs from other brands or the T2 chip is configured to work only with Apple SSDs. We will see later what Apple's approach is.
