The next SD cards will reach the speed of one gigabyte per second

In the presentation of the last Macs we knew SSD disks that allowed read and write speeds of around 500MB per second. This speed was valued by many as a great innovation highly appreciated by users who need to move large volumes of data in a short time.

But today this high speed has become outdated, if we compare it with the speed of the new SD cards, with a capacity of around one gigabyte. Known as version 7.0, they have made improvements in two areas to exponentially improve their potential. This version is becoming known as "SD Express"

It will be compatible with PCIe 3.0 and NVMe 1.3 interface, so that the breakneck speed is not diluted by the device where they are inserted. The information we have is that are capable of moving data at 985MB per second, although it is not specified whether in read mode or read and write at the same time.

However, even if they cannot take advantage of their full potential, will continue to be compatible with older PCIe-like transfer interfaces. Of course, in other standards, they are only available with a speed of 104 megabytes per second.

On the other hand, the news in the new SD cards will not come exclusively from the speed side. What's more, storage capacities are increased. The current generation of SD cards can reach 2 TB, the new format known as SD UltraCapacity, it would reach 128 TB of storage.

Due to the high cost that we assume these memory cards will have, these SD cards  will be aimed at the professional sector, where they need to move 4k and 8k video files, 360 degree videos, RAW photo or video formats According to SD Association President Mr. Hiroyuki Sakamoto:

With SD Express, we are offering a whole new level of memory card with faster protocols, turning the cards into a removable SSD.

The SD 7.0 standard offers groundbreaking innovations to anticipate the needs of upcoming high-speed, content-rich devices and applications.

The dates of the implementation of these new standards are unknown. Producers of the new SSDs and creators of hardware have to come together to take advantage of all the benefits of this technology.
