TotalFinder, much more than tabs for your Finder

The Finder is one of the reasons I love Mac OS X, but I think Snow Leopard should have implemented some usability improvements in addition to the usual transition of code to Cocoa. Apple didn't, BinaryAge did.

Lashes, a staple

Can you imagine the suffering it would be to use a web browser without tabs today? Well, that's what I feel with the Finder when TotalFinder is not active, a loss of productivity and practicality that borders on the indescribable.

The TotalFinder tabs integrate perfectly with the aesthetics of Mac OS X when using the Chrome interface, and we can improve it even more by activating the function of compressing the space to gain a few pixels (CMD + Shift + B), something that you I highly recommend.

You may think that tabs are useful but that sometimes it is better to have separate windows, which we can achieve by dragging a tab out of its location, that simple. And if we want we can drag files to the tabs themselves, so I do not see that separation necessary in many cases.

There is much more to discover

The rest of the features of TotalFinder are quite interesting and can be divided into five parts:

  • Dual mode: two Finder windows side by side, which are siamese.
  • Folders on top: I love this one, it allows you to always have the folders at the top of the file list.
  • Hide / Show: as simple as pressing CMD + Shift +. to hide or show hidden files. Another point for TotalFinder.
  • The Viewer: This is an 'emergency' window that slides out from below for quick operations.
  • Asepsis: TotalFinder takes care that the .DS_Store files don't bother you, and it's appreciated.

Best of all, there are other improvements to come in future releases as well, including Safari-style tabs, a copy / paste system, and Mac OS X Terminal integration.

Conclusion

For me an essential program in any Snow Leopard worth its salt, even if it costs $ 15 - you have a 14-day trial to decide whether to pay for it or not.

I take this opportunity to thank Antonin -BinaryAge developer- for his kindness in granting us a license for this review and his effort with TotalFinder. Keep working on it!

[ironic mode: on] The "Folders above" sounded like a "switcher" to me [ironic mode: off]

At the moment I manage with the Finder, but I do not rule out trying TotalFinder ...

It has sounded excessively switcher, but I am one of those maqueros who have no qualms about adapting and improving Mac OS X with the good of Windows, and one of those things is the "folders on top" (there are few, but there are).
