Upgrade your 21-inch iMac from 2017 to 64GB of RAM thanks to OWC

The OWC computer components house has just launched new RAM memory pack, this time for the 21-inch iMac 2017. These models are the models that were released in the summer of 2017 and two of them have 4k and 5k screens.

These Macs are focused on the professional niche, by taking advantage of high resolution screens. We are talking about computers that exceed € 3.000 and require large consumption of resources, including RAM. These Macs generally feature 16GB when some go up to 32GB. Now with OWC we can reach 64 GB of RAM.

The component house offers us the two RAM chips, 32 GB of RAM eachBy U.S. dollar 895. These solutions are to assemble it yourself. The iMac, although its disassembly with is complex, requires specific knowledge and materials. Therefore, if you purchase RAM with the tools for disassembly, the price is $ 899.

If we compare the prices offered by Apple in terms of RAM, the basic Apple model has 8 GB of RAM. If you want to increase to 16GB, you must add € 240 to your bill and € 720 if you want to go from 8 GB to 32 GB. Therefore, little more than what Apple offers you, you have twice the RAM and above all an expansion that is enough for the most demanding users. Having a 64 GB iMac means being on the same level as the most Pro models in the house, such as the iMac Pro or Mac Pro models.

Installing RAM in a 21-inch iMac is more complex than the 27-inch model, as it is necessary to disassemble the Mac completely. We show you a video with the installation of these components.

Now what you need is some time and patience. You do not need to have a lot of experience in the installation, or be very handy.

In the meantime, we hope to see some news about the next iMac. This week we discussed the strategy that Apple will follow with these teams. The incorporation of the T2 chip would force the use of SSD memory, with the cost of the equipment. In any case, we will inform you of any news.

A fantastic video to make this enlargement. There should be Spanish translation for those who are not fluent in English. Just add that the connector of the power supply board, which is under the board, goes with a "clamp", so when you put your hand in to release it, you have to press in the center while it is removed. In the video you don't see it because he puts his hand to get it out.
On the other hand, the pcie ssd inside is not soldered. In many places it says yes, but it is not. So since I had it open I bought a new 1tb ssd and installed it too. I don't understand why Apple puts a 32gb ssd in a €1.500 computer. To date, it is only used for backup, but not even the operating system fits. It would be better to put a larger one and make a small partition for recovery. Thank you very much for the video. Great job.

By the way…buying it on Amazon, 2 ram tablets of 8gb each, an adapter from nmve mw to pcie m.2, and a 1TB ssd, and the stickers to close it again, the thing cost me €180. And now my iMac has 16gb and two ssd hard drives of 1tb each.
A cucumber and its price has increased in case you want to sell it.
