We can now set the default Ecosia search engine in Safari for macOS

Ecosia

Making Google the default browser on iOS allows Tim Cook's company to walk in with virtually nothing of $ 10.000 billion every year, a deal that seems they don't look kindly the American and European authorities.

Leaving aside this type of agreement (which I personally see as totally legal) with the update that Apple has launched a few hours ago and with which macOS Big Sur reaches version 11.1, We can now set Ecosia as the default search engine.

Ecosia is a search engine that has been on the market for a few years and taking into account the care for the environment that Apple always represents, a strange result that it has taken so long to arrive. The Ecosita search engine is based on user privacy (it does not store user search data and does not track them either) and also plant trees all over the world with every search you do.

Ecosia plants trees around the world thanks to the ad revenue it displays. In 2020 alone, this search engine has generated enough advertising money to plant more than 7 million trees, a figure that should increase in the coming years now that we can set it by default.

On the Ecosia website, we can read that as of today has planted more than 115 million trees worldwide. The company publishes its revenue reports to show exactly where all the money it collects from advertising is being spent, so it all points to actually having a good environmental purpose.

After including Ecosia, the search engines that we can set by default in Safari are: Google, Yahoo, Bing, Duck Duck Go in addition to Ecosia. If we set Ecosia as the default search engine, all the searches we make through the Safari address bar will return results from this search engine.
