We tested the miniStack Max: first impressions and assembly (I)

newtech

That the Mac mini is an excellent computer is something that no one doubts, since it contains in a incredibly small space a great capacity for both processing and storage, especially if we buy the kit to install a second hard drive inside. But if we still want more, we have two options: one is to put hard drives and even optical readers connected and another is to get a solution like the miniStack Max, with the additions in the form of USB 3.0 ports (three), eSATA port (one) , FireWire ports (two), card reader and optical reader that this product offers us.

First impressions

The first thing that surprises about the miniStack Max when we open the box is that, as advertised, it looks perfect with it. Mac Mini. the integration is simply perfect at all levels in the Newertech product, although if we wear something exquisite we can argue that the tone of the aluminum is not exactly the same, something with which I think we can all live without any problem.

The product is made from an aluminum shell and various plastic parts, a structure very similar to that of the apple computer and that ensures that the homogeneity in the design is not lost at any time. From Newertech they have opted not to take any extravagant license and that is appreciated, since the final set is much more interesting as it is today.

Open

Once we open the miniStack Max (removing the four screws that hold the aluminum casing) we find a really simple product, well organized and has a MagLev fan identical to the one used in the Mac mini to make absolutely no noise. Those of you who have a Mac with this type of fan will know what I am talking about, and that is that in most cases the sound of it is imperceptible.

Mounting

Mounting

If you are afraid to mount this type of thing yourself, it must be said that you can buy the mini Stack Max with the purchased hard drive, but if like me you already had one to use, then you will have no choice but to get down to business, and the truth is that it is so simple that even the most big-handed person could do it without complications. While I recognize that the second hard drive kit for the Mac Mini is complicated to assemble, installing a hard drive in the miniStack Max takes no more than five minutes.

To do this we must insert the hard drive from behind, connect the data cable, connect the power cable and put the four screws that will hold the hard drive to the product's casing and that will give it the necessary stability so that it never fails when reading and write data. Y we will have finishedas it is as simple as that. If we are also going to mount an optical disc reader unit, it will take a little longer, but the process is really similar (our unit has an integrated Blu-Ray reader).
