Western Digital surprisingly updates its hard drives with Thunderbolt 3 and more surprises

We do not know if Apple's equipment and peripheral suppliers have been caught wrong. But it has been to announce by the company its commitment to new equipment in the professional part of the range and the suppliers have gone crazy to bring out news or products in development that in the best of cases were not expected until 2018.

Days ago we commented on the new Nvidia cards, which would be designed for a possible iMac Pro and for Mac Pro, both current (with the possibility of expansion) and future. More recently we told how Intel was stepping on the accelerator for the release of the new chips.

Now it is the turn of the hard drives. In this case, the Western Digital brand finishes presenting what represents a profound update of its equipment. For a few weeks the external drives have full connectivity via USB-C, and an optimization of the speeds used, for the entire range. Now is the turn of Thunderbolt 3 for the entire range of products, renamed as follows:

  • G-Drive with Thunderbolt 3
  • G-Raid with Thunderbolt 3

These new features will be to the liking of creative professionals, both for the capture and transfer of material obtained in high resolutions.

If you are thinking of changing or expanding your Mac storage, here are some features of the G-Drive with Thunderbolt 3: It features dual TB3 ports, a USB-C port, and USB 3.1 support. Now we can connect up to five devices in a chain. We have a brand HGST Ultrastar at 7200RPM, being able to reach transfer rates up to 245 Mb / s. Lastly, Time Machine support is included as on previous computers.

Available in four storage capacities: 4TB for $ 399.95, 6TB for $ 499.95, 8TB for $ 599.95, and 10TB for € 699.95. On this occasion, we also have an additional 12 TB version that will be released sometime in the "next quarter" at € 799.95

The option of G-Raid with Thunderbolt 3, incorporates two TB3 ports, a USB-C port, and an HDMI port on the outside of the box. This output allows you to output video at 60 fps in 4K and HDR content. It incorporates 7.200 rpm hard drives and can daisy chain up to five additional devices, with transfer speeds reaching 500 Mb / s.

In terms of capacities, they mount: 8 TB of start for $ 749.95. The 12 TB option costs € 849.95, 16 TB is $ 1,099.95, 20 TB is priced at $ 1,549.95 and the top of the range is 24 TB at $ 1,999.95. This latest version is not available for now, but is expected shortly.
