What to do if your iMac, model late 2012 to late 2013, does not start with the expected speed

IMAC SLOW

IMacs are becoming one of the computers desktop "all in one"  most famous in the world of personal computing. The last update of this model was in the year 2012, in which the model was slimmed down by eliminating the side recorder.

From its launch to the present, Apple has been updating them in terms of processors and internal solid disks. The latest update modifies the RAM memory models and processors to the new Haswells.

The fact is that some users, including myself, are experiencing general system slowdowns not only when starting the computer but also in any of the actions we perform with the OSX itself.

I have come to have to wait until more than a minute in order to invoke System Preferences.

In the case of my iMac, it is the model that just went on sale in December 2012, so it is what Apple designates as "late 2012". In the case of my personal experience, the steps followed began by going to the "Disk Utility" and verify permits followed by a permit repair. The fact is that the system was still in its thirteen. Taking into account that all existing models of this new iMac right now are within the warranty period, I contacted Apple's online technical service by phone.

After telling them about the problems I was having, they made me follow these steps:

  • In the Finder menu, we are going to "Go" and click on "Computer". We sail to Macintosh HD / Library / Caches   and we delete all the files that exist.
  • Also in the Finder menu, but adding the pressing of the "Alt" key to bring up the "Library" section. Inside it, we navigate to the Caches folder and also delete the content.
  • Now we turn off the equipment. We disconnected the power cable for 15 seconds. We plug the cable back in, wait 5 seconds and press the power button.
  • After the system restarts, we go to the next step, which will consist of restarting the PRAM memory, for which we turn on the computer and hold down the keys Command + Option + P + R. We must press the key combination before the gray screen appears. We will keep pressing the keys until the computer restarts and we hear the startup sound for the second time. We release the keys and let it reboot.

KEYBOARD PRAM

  • Finally, we go back to "Disk Utility" and verify and repair permissions.

If after performing all these actions you cannot make your computer work properly, the next step is to restore the system to factory by pressing at the start of Alt + cmd + R.

In my case, for an iMac late 2012 after performing all the steps described and even after restoring the system, I have continued to have the same slowdown problems, so I ended up approaching the official technical service so that qualified Apple technicians detect the problem. In a later post I will tell you what they tell me.

Now, in the case of the new models of iMac late 2013, the problems that some users are reporting are late start-up problems. In these cases, according to those of Cupertino, everything is normal since these new computers configure the power settings of the RAM at the first boot. Depending on the RAM that the computer has, that first start will take more or less, so we should not be alarmed by a slow start the first time you turn it on.

The same thing happened to me with an imac 2012, I restored Mavericks with a clean installation and it was solved with a very fast start of all the applications, but a few days later the same thing happened again, delaying the loading of the programs.
