The Finder is a great file manager, but it has some shortcomings such as the ability to use tabs or cut & paste, something that sometimes makes moving files quite easy.
The traditional option has always been TotalFinder, but with XtraFinder we have some functionalities similar to those of this application without having to shell out money, since at least for now XtraFinder is free.
I personally stopped using TotalFinder because it made the Finder slower, and XtraFinder also has the same logical problem. Now is when you decide what you prefer, if speed or extra features.

I come from the old days, I use muCommander. 1 window divided into 2, like Directory Opus in its time.
what about pathfinder?
