Are you going to buy an iMac 5k? Know the differences between the model of 2015 and 2017

When we talk about Mac with high performance, we have to keep in mind the iMac 5k that arrived in 2015. Even more so, part of our jobs or hobbies involve editing photos or video. The iMac 5k that appeared for the first time in 2015, marked a trend for high-performance desktops, and of course, the first stone of the super powerful equipment that Apple has been presenting to us since the presentation of the MacBook Pro last fall. In fact, until we get the iMac Pro in the next few months, this is the most powerful iMac on the market.

In this comparison, we will know the performance of the 2017 model, presented at the WWDC in 2017 and the 2015 model, so that you have all the information and values that you are interested in purchasing, even more so when Apple sells the 2015 model at a significant discount.

Let's start with the outside. Externally both iMac are identical, except for the change of the ports Thunderbold 2 that builds the 2015 team, compared to the Thunderbold 3 with USB-C connection of the 2017 model. Quantifying this difference means doubling the transmission speed, up to 40 Gb / s and the possibility of connecting multiple devices, up to another 5k monitor or even 2 with 4k quality.

We go inside this extraordinary machine. Both models have an Intel i7 processor, the highest exponent at that time. Of course, in 2015 we have the Sky Lake version at 4.0-4.2 GHz, while 2017 version rides Kaby Lake at 4.2 to 4.5 GHz.

But let's see the benchmarks using Geekbench 4: The difference is 9% with a single core and 16% using multiple cores.. The score performed on the two machines is 5.263 and 16.975 for the 2015 model, while the 2017 model offers 5.736 and 19.774 respectively.

With day-to-day use, the 2017 Mac is faster and somewhat quieter. The fan spins slightly less than the 2015 model, which translates into more heating. If this heating translates into a small slowdown of the computer, perhaps we prefer a better fan, to make the most of the performance of the iMac.

In short, we have very similar teams. It will be easier to take advantage of the 2017 team, since it mounts more current components and therefore, in theory, this Mac will withstand the passage of time better. However, if you don't need high transmission rates or the connection of external monitors with huge features, the iMac of 2015 will more than fulfill your wishes.
