Apple faces class action lawsuits over operation of MacBook Pro keyboards

A few days ago we told you about protests on the forums in relation to poor performance of the 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro keyboards. These two models, have a butterfly keyboard, which has great defenders and detractors and is characterized by its short course.

Curiously, most of the problems occur on the MacBook Pro. Around 10% of laptops would be affected, a not inconsiderable figure. Interestingly, the MacBook that has the same type of keyboard, does not have as many repairs. Two clients have opened a class action against Apple, for the problem of operation of the keyboards of their laptops.

If the problem arises during the warranty period, Apple will replace it without problems. But changing this keyboard implies changing many more parts and therefore, out of warranty has a cost of € 700 to € 900. This failure in the keyboards has led two users to initiate a class action lawsuit against Apple, something similar to what happened with the battery problems of the iPhones a few months ago.

Specifically, Zixuan-RaoHe bought a 15-inch MacBook Por in January. A month later, the B key did not work properly. Since the problem was not fixed at the Apple Store, Apple offered a free repair, but it has taken a week to repair. In any case, the user doubts the reliability of these keyboards, and is using an external keyboard.

In another case, Kyle Barbaro, ran into a space bar problem. This key is used constantly on a daily basis on his 2016 MacBook Pro. After a one-off repair, the problem emerged a week later. In this case, the Mac is not under warranty, and the preparation offered by Apple was $ 700, since it must change, in addition to the keyboard, the trackpad, and the rest.

The two clients are seeking support within the Apple community to initiate a lawsuit. Last week we met a Initiative on Change.org urging Apple to replace these keyboards for free.

The same thing happens to me with several letters. This week I took it to the service, due to defects in the screen, which they changed for free and I took the opportunity to mention this problem. The keyboard has been cleaned (that's what they told me) and so far the problem has been resolved. But it is a drag. It is apparently the little space that the key has to do its work, in this new design, that any particle of dirt makes the mechanism erratic. I know this will be repeated in the future, but it seems to me that replacing the keyboard is not a permanent solution.
