Apple hires leading ARM CPU designer when more rumors exist about Mac with ARM chips

For years it comes speculating on ARM chips running on Macs. The main advantage was a reduction in power consumption that favors the autonomy of any battery and improves the temperature of any Mac. At the same time, the problems of constant vulnerabilities to the Intel chip has partly triggered Apple to study Alternatives.

Although there is no confirmation from Apple, the company has decided to hire Mike Filippo, being the main ARM-based systems architect on a CPU. The hiring took place last month, but today it has become known to the media.

Filippo wears over 10 years driving CPU upgrades with ARM chips. From his hand the Cortex-A76, Cortex-A72, Cortex-A57 have emerged. But at the same time he is immersed in 7nm + chips and 5nm chips. This ARM expert may appear to accept an ambitious project in an inexperienced subject, such as the build of a Mac. However, he worked for Intel between 2004 and 2009, before previously going through ARM between 1996 and 2004. Therefore , is one of the most experienced people in all systems.

This is one more piece of evidence about Macs with ARM processors. To clear up doubts, Intel itself told Axios that Apple would transition to ARM beginning in fiscal year 202. In any case, if Apple has characterized something in recent years, it is to be cautious and will not change to ARM until the change is fully ready. At the moment he is evaluating new options.

Many of our Macs already have ARM chips, although these are secondary. The T2 chip is an example of this. In this phase, Apple wants most of our equipment to have ARM chips. In fact, the convergence of systems such as iOS and macOS may also be due to a processor convergence. Remember that iPhones and iPads have had ARM chips for years. Nevertheless, change an operating system like macOS to ARM processors is not an easy task, especially when they will coexist with old Macs with Intel chips for a long time.
