With the fourth generation of the Apple TV, the Cupertino-based company is trying to turn the Apple TV 4 in a gaming device for your living room. However, as we see, Apple's vision of multiplayer games on Apple TV 4 is very limited.
According to some developers who have already received their Apple TV 4 Developer Kit, the device only supports up to two controllers connected by Bluetooth at the same time. This is in addition to the use of Siri that is included with the device and can also be used as a gaming device.
Well this is a bit of a bummer. We just received one of the developer kits that were lucky to win from Apple. We went ran to buy a ton of controllers in the hopes of making an 8 player board game.
These hopes were quickly dashed when they realized that the new Apple TV will only connect to two external Bluetooth devices at the same time, along with the included connected remote. This limitation means that only a maximum of three players they can participate in a multiplayer game on Apple TV 4 at any given time.
This limitation however only applies to iPhone (MFI) drivers, and not to the iPhone itself. This means that developers can add support to their games for the Apple TV, to make use of the iPhone as a gaming device, but this requires much more effort in developing them.
Apple may be able to remove this restriction from Apple TV 4 through a future updateBut whether you end up doing something like this or not is something only time will tell.
