Adobe finalizes the transition from Photoshop and Lightroom to 64 bits

The latest versions of Adobe software are 100% 64-bit. But there are still some versions where the main structure of the application or small parts, they still work in 32 bit.

Either way, Adobe advertises that all their software is available in 64-bit with the arrival of macOS Catalina 10.15, during the month of September. Given the proximity, Adobe must have the applications ready and will be doing all the pertinent tests so that the software does not have compatibility problems or affect the work of its users. Among the applications that are pending to make the transition to 64 bits, we find Photoshop and Lightroom.

If we have installed lThe latest versions of Adobe, these are fully written in 64 bits. We are talking about Photoshop (20.x), Lightroom (2.x), and Lightroom Classic (8.x). That is, these versions are 100% compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina. In fact, in the subscription of Creative Cloud versions for macOS 10.15 Catalina are available, but these versions cannot be used in versions prior to Catalina. Therefore, as of today, they can only be tested within the macOS 10.15 Catalina betas.

In other versions prior to those indicated, there are still some parts written in 32 bits. These applications must be updated before Catalina, as they will not be compatible. For example, in Lightroom Classic an application that allows work with local photos, it is still in 32 bit. In addition, we find a component for video playback, which is again written in 32-bit. Another sub application, Lens Profile Creator, which creates optical profiles, will also need to be upgraded to 64-bit.

The negative part will be the old versions with perpetual license. These will not be updated and therefore users will not be able to upgrade to Catalina if they want to continue using these applications. There is no confirmation, but some user can choose to use Catalina and virtualize macOS Mojave to continue using 32-bit applications, such as Adobe applications.

Publishing a news without putting the date is to make it useless from day one. Congratulations.
