Apple has become the first American company to donate to the China Foundation for Aid Against Poverty (CFPA), a non-governmental organization in charge of helping and helping those Chinese citizens affected by the recent floods along the Yangtze River due to heavy rains in the region.
According to USA Today, the CFPA reported receiving about 7 million yuan (which is equivalent to approximately $ 1 million) from a donation made by the Cupertino company last Monday, showing its support and contribution to the affected country.
"Our thoughts are with all those affected by the floods along the Yangtze River"said Apple CEO Tim Cook on the popular Chinese social network Weibo.
The publication cites statistics from China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, saying that torrential rains they have affected 31 million people in more than 500 cities throughout the region. Around a million people are in need of some kind of emergency assistance as a result of the floods, which started in late June and continue today.
It is not the first time that Apple financially helps the eastern country in case of natural disasters. Recently, the company contributed $ 1.6 million to help victims of a devastating earthquake that shook Yunnan province in 2014. And just a year earlier, Apple donated $ 8 million for the earthquake in Sichuan province.
Beyond its own corporate philanthropy, Apple Routinely leverages iTunes to help proactively donate all of its users, assisting efforts made in an emergency, funded by the Red Cross. Other special promotions and brand features include events such as the World AIDS Day, when the company donates a portion of the sales in the App Store to the RED Foundation.
