New firmware for the SMC of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro

Apple just released an update to the SMC firmware (System Management Controller) or system management controller to try to solve a problem on the MacBook line related to the battery.

The problem seems to be that the battery can stop working without notice resulting in the computer shutting down completely or stopping the system if the battery drops below one percent.

This update will be available for both MacBook Pro and MacBook Air although with differences in the version number. It can be downloaded directly from the updates section of the Mac App Store or as a download from the Apple support page.

MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update v1.8

This update is recommended for mid-2012 MacBook Pro models.

This update addresses rare issues that caused the battery to unexpectedly stop working or the system to hang when the battery charge was less than 1%.

MacBook Air SMC Firmware Update v1.9

This update is recommended for mid-2012 and mid-2013 MacBook Air models.

This update addresses rare issues that caused the battery to unexpectedly stop working, the system did not recognize the battery, or the system hang when the battery charge was less than 1%.

For my part I am the owner of a MacBook Air from mid 2012 and until now I hadn't noticed anything strange in the behavior of the equipment when the battery was operational but it never hurts to prevent future mishaps, so it is highly recommended to install these updates.

If my macbook pro is mid 2010, I don't have to download that update?
