Barry Jenkins, one of the protagonists of "Behind the Mac" pays tribute to James Baldwin

Barry Jenkins

This is an article that has been published on the Apple website and in which one of the protagonists of the "Behind the Mac" campaign, starring creators who use the Mac to work, pays tribute to his creator the well-known James Baldwin.

Both are immersed in the world of cinema and Jenkins appeared in the campaign created by Baldwin with a MacBook Pro, protecting himself from the rain with an umbrella. Now this Oscar-winning director explains a little about his arrival at the cinema and appreciates the work done by Baldwin in all facets of life and applauds the work done in the cinema with the tools they used in the past.

Barry Jenkins

Jenkins explains in this interview details of his beginnings in the world of cinema and above all clarifies how his interest in cinema was aroused by pure chance when I was studying at Florida State University:

I was caught by the time when traditional cinema was beginning to give way to a new cinematographic style. Those of my class learned to edit using editing tables where the photographic film had to be literally cut and then pasted again. After editing films like this for a year, it was a radical change to move to a non-linear type of editing. But I internalized everything I learned and only edit when it seems absolutely necessary.

Jenkins, who has studied traditional and modern techniques, achieves his signature style thanks to digital equipment such as the ARRI Alexa camera, MacBook Pro and even his new iPad Pro. So he really appreciates how the marriage between Arri cameras and the Apple platform they are of great help in becoming the filmmaker that you are today. Now an important project appears in his career and it is the series for Amazon based on The Underground Railroad by Coulson Whitehead. "I wanted to make a movie set in my neighborhood, and I did that with Moonlight. I also wanted to adapt my favorite author, which I did with Beale Street. And finally I wanted to talk about the condition of slavery in the United States. And there is The Underground Railroad".

This is an interesting interview in which director Barry Jenkins talks about his third short film, The Beale Street Blues, and the potential of the new generation of young filmmakers with the tools they have in their hands today. As he says, you can do anything you want with a telephone or a DSLR. If you want you can read the full interview in the apple website.
