Check your Mac's RAM outside of OS X

If we have recently bought a second-hand Mac or have been loaned one to carry out a specific job that may become important, it does not hurt to test the RAM to avoid surprises unpleasant in the future with possible random failures and that we pull our hair trying to figure out where the failure may come from.

RAM is a fundamental component where the system accesses almost constantly to save the active work that the applications and processes that are running at that moment are using. If there is a problem with the RAM, then there may be data corruption related problems in that job. Let's see how to solve this possible problem.

To test your Mac's memory, a number of tools can be used, such as the Memtest utility Terminal based or the Rember app which is practically the same but with a graphical interface.

However, these programs are run with the operating system running behind and this causes the memory part to be 'locked' assigned to the operating system that you are using and that should be tested by these programs as well.

It is for this reason that it is always best to use the 'Apple Hardware Test' suite to minimize resource consumption and that all RAM can be fully analyzed. To start the hardware tests you must start your Mac with the «D» key pressed immediately after hearing the system boot sound or if it is not directly available since our equipment is after June 2013, we will have to leave ALT + D pressed, this will cause the tests to be downloaded directly from Apple's servers.

Once done we will choose the extended memory test option in which it can be extended up to two hours of verification but at the end will return a full report to us of errors discovered in RAM.

Indeed, my fault. If available just press "D" after the startup sound. If it is not pre-installed or available, you will have to press ALT + D to download
