Convert MKV files to MP4 with the free MKV2ATV app

A few years ago, both iOS and Apple TV supported a single video file format. But with the arrival of third-party applications, this compatibility was running out and currently on our iPhone or Apple TV we can play any type of video file.

However, depending on the model, files in MKV format are likely to choke on our device, mainly due to its size. MKV files contain, in addition to a video track, several audio and subtitle tracks. With applications like MKV2ATV we can extract only the tracks that interest us the most.

When extracting the tracks that interest us most in MP4 format, final file size is reduced, as well as quality, although to a lesser extent. MKV2ATV allows us to select which audio and video tracks we want to extract, we can only select one, since the MP4 format does not support more than one.

This application allows us to perform this batch process, that is, we can add different movies and extract from them only the version that interests us the most to play on our favorite device. Regarding sound, the application respects 5.1 sound, as long as our equipment is compatible.

MKV2ATV had a regular price on the Mac App Store of 5,49 euros, but for a few months, the developer offers it to us for free through the link that I leave at the end of this article. The minimum requirements to be able to use this application is macOS 10.13, so if your computer has a previous version, unfortunately you will not be able to use it.
