I ask again: is it necessary to have a 5.1 or similar speaker system for this 3D effect or is it a "virtualized" sound achieved only with the Mac's own speakers? I have version 1.6 on a 2008 iMac and I'm doing great, I don't know if I would really notice more improvement than the one I already have ...

Well, after buying Boom 3D, my experience is not positive. Every two by three I am forced to disconnect it because it induces noise in the speakers of my system.
I disconnect it and leave my PC by default and it is true that I lose spatiality, but in return I enjoy a clean sound, free of extremely annoying interference type noises. Had I known, I would not have bought it.
