Free up space on your Mac without third-party applications

In a few hours we are in 2019 and loaded with good intentions. One of them, which you may leave out with some frequency, is free up space on your Mac of superfluous content, or that you no longer need. This task can be expensive, due to having to spend time on an ungrateful task, and at the same time, looking for an application for it, can sometimes consume effort and in some cases money.

Today we will see how to free up space on our Mac with an application that is by default on our Mac, the macOS application System information, found in the operating system from macOS Sierra.

To access this function, it is as simple as following the steps below:

  1. At the top of the screen. In the task bar, we find the apple apple. We click on it.
  2. The first option is About this Mac. We press.
  3. A screen opens, with several options at the top. Tap on Storage.
  4. Now you'll see graphically the storage of this Mac, by color, on which is taking up space.
  5. Click the button Manage…

Now you will see: on the left side, which sections take up more space. On the right side the actions to be carried out. For example. First of all we find the recommendations. We find four types:

  1. Activate that macOS archive in iCloud cloud content that we do not use frequently, such as: files, photos, iCloud messages.
  2. Optimize the iTunes and Mail space. In iTunes we can tell you to delete all the episodes of series or Podcast that we have already seen or heard. In Mail, only the most recent attachments are kept.
  3. Recycle Bin: ask you to only keep files in the trash for less than 30 days.
  4. File review: It indicates the files that, by size or containing folder, we may not need. It offers us to manage them.

Finally, in the bar on the left we know the space that is occupying other sections, such as Photos, Trash. For example, delete iOS backups you store in iTunes, or don't use.
