Mac in Russia

Starting in AprilIf Apple wants to continue selling Macs and other devices in the country, it will have to allow a series of its own applications designed by Russian designers to be installed. This is established by the country's legislation and companies must comply with it. Not that there is much more choice. Contrary to what Europe defends, Russia wants its national product to be integrated into international ones.

The new legislation that comes into force as of April 1 in Russia requires that those companies that sell technological devices in the country must allow the installation of certain local applications. For this reason, Apple, in order to continue selling Mac, iPhone, iPad and so many, etc., must allow applications designed by Russian premises to be integrated into the software of the Californian company.

Russia's lower house of parliament passed laws in November 2019 that require the installation of government-approved apps on electronic devices sold in the country. While the introduction of the rules was previously postponed, it appears that Apple is preparing to comply with the legislation before its introduction in April.

Apple's regional office has confirmed that there is already an agreement in this regard and as of April 1 they will present a new screen to users. A selection of applications produced by Russian developers will be offered. Users will be able to select which applications will allow or refuse to install through this screen as part of the setup process.

Now they are still discussing with Apple which apps should be included in the list. A list that is not closed and that it can evolve as time goes by. Rumor has it that the apps being talked about include:

  • browsers
  • antivirus
  • maps
  • tools Messenger service
  • an application of state services
  • one for the payment system MirPay
