Hide a software update in OS X

New iMac with update symbol

With the release of OS X Mountain Lion, Apple changed the way it handled software updates on the Mac. Instead of going to the apple icon and then "Software update", all this in the software update panel in the Finder, now software updates are managed from the Mac App Store in the Updates tab.

Now sometimes we have an application that we do not want to update more and it bothers us to see it in the updates panel every time we enter the Mac App Store application. Fortunately, Apple provides an easy way to hide an update. It should be noted, that hiding one of these updates will mean that it does not ask you for an installation until the next time an update is released for that application.

How to hide a software update in OS X Mountain Lion?

First, we enter the Mac App Store from Launchpad. Then, we click on the "Updates" icon, which will bring up the available updates. If there are multiple updates, we can click on "More" to see the full list. To hide an update, we place the mouse on the update that we want to hide, right click (or CTRL + left click) and select "Hide Update" in the box next to the cursor. The update will now be hidden until a new update is available.

If for any reason, we need an update that we have hidden to be shown later, we enter the Mac App Store, click on the updates tab and then click on the top menu "Store" selecting this time "Show all software updates."

To perform the update, we click on the Store menu, once again, and select the page "Load again". All changes will now appear in the list.
