How to change how long notifications are shown in OS X El Capitan

With the arrival of notifications to OS X, it seems that the way we work has improved considerably.

Modify the time that notifications are displayed on the screen

  • First we go to Terminal, or click directly on the search magnifying glass and type Terminal to open it.

  • Next we copy and paste the following text: defaults write com.apple.notificationcenterui bannerTime 10changing the number 10, for the seconds we want the notifications that are shown every time we receive something to last.
  • Once the change is made, we will proceed to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

If you have set 10 seconds and it seems like an eternity compared to the five seconds that are natively set in OS X El Capitan, follow the same steps and enter a lower value, for example 7 and restart the Mac again. Everything depends on the usefulness or not real for us of the notifications, but if we do not usually take advantage of it, it is best to always activate Do Not Disturb mode. On the other hand, if your almost depends on them, the best thing would be to extend the time that they are shown in order to have enough time to be able to visualize it once we have finished what we were doing.
