No current Mac has touch ID that allows unlocking as we do in our most recent iPhones and iPads however, the opening to third parties of the fingerprint detector that Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), made with the arrival of iOS 8 has made it possible to fill that lack thanks to Macid, a paid app that you can now get totally free.
MacID, free for a limited time
Macid it will permit you unlock your Mac via Touch ID on your iPhone or iPad without having to enter the user password. A function that, yes, is very good, but perhaps not enough to spend the € 3,99 that it usually costs. Yet now, and for two days, MacID is free on the App Store.
Its operation is, as you can imagine, very simple. It will also notify you on your iOS device when the Mac has been turned on or whenever OS X Yosemite asks for the administrator password. But Macid It works through Bluetooth 4.0 so you should keep in mind that you will need:
- OS X Yosemite installed on your Mac
- A Mac with Bluetooth 4.0 (MacBook Air from 2011 onwards, MacBook Pro from 2012 or higher, iMac from 2012 onwards, Mac Mini from 2011 onwards, and Mac Pro from 2013 onwards).
- iPhone 5S onwards, iPad Air 2 or iPad Mini 3
- iOS 8
