Apple's decision to do without all the ports for its quintessential laptop, the MacBook, and just give it a USB-C was controversial. It was also the case with the MacBook Pro, which have four USB-C ports but without the classic card reader, HDMI or some conventional USB.
That is why it is almost essential to have an adapter with different types of ports, and Kingston Nucleum stands out for its solid construction, available ports and performance. We have tested it and we tell you our impressions.
It is a very well built device, solid and robust right out of the box. I have already tried many adapters of this type and in none of them have I had the feeling of being in front of one as well built as this Nucleum. It is larger than others, it is true, and heavier, but they are details that do not have the slightest importance considering that it will go in my backpack with my laptop. Aluminum and plastic are the materials used in this concentrator, and the finishes correspond to those that a brand like Kingston should offer.
Ports offered include two USB-A 3.1, one USB-C for laptop charging, another USB-C 3.1, a microSD UHS-I reader, another SD UHS-I and II reader, and a 1.4K compatible HDMI 4 port. As a MacBook user, I find it extremely practical to have a USB-C port to charge my laptop and another to transmit data, since many adapters of this type only include a USB-C port, and if you are charging your laptop you have that port completely unused. Connections are stable, with no connection losses during file transfers.
The charging power offered by this adapter is up to 60W, which will only be a problem with the MacBook Pro 15 ″ that needs 87W. The 13 "or MacBook 12" models will be able to keep their battery at 100% while working with this Nucleum. An important detail: during the file transfer you should not connect or disconnect the charger, since the adapter disconnects in either case, and the transfer is interrupted. Knowing that this happens is not of great importance, but you must take it into account.
Editor's opinion
Kingston's Nucleum is a multi-port adapter with a construction and quality of materials that stand out from the competition. The speed of its USB ports, having two USB-C ports and allowing a charging power of up to 60W make it one of the best alternatives for those who want a reliable and durable device. Available for about € 65 in stores like Amazon () it is more expensive than other similar products from the competition but the difference is noticeable right out of the box. Of course, a carry bag is missing.
