Linux is now fully executable on Apple Silicon M1 Macs

Linux can now be run on Mac M1

A month ago we told you it was more than likely that Linux could be run from the Mac M1 shortly. Now we know it's possible thanks to Chris Wade technical manager of Corellium development. They just showed how one of the new Mac minis based on these chips was capable of booting with an Ubuntu ARM distribution. However, it is not gold everything that shines.

Chris Wade, head of Corellium (the same ones who developed the checkra1n jailbreak) and his workers have shown that Linux can now run successfully on newer Macs with M1. The guinea pig this time was a Mac mini but it was supposed to be possible on any of the Macs that now have the new chip. Now, not everything is a bed of roses and not everything works perfectly.

Wade noted that users can boot Linux on an Apple Silicon chip using pongoOS, which is a preboot execution environment built on top of checkra1n. The checkra1n jailbreak itself takes advantage of the checkm8 exploit that was discovered in 2019. Corellium has introduced the latest changes to the Linux port for M1 in your Github account. Wade also said he would launch a tutorial on Friday.

This support is not entirely complete. There is an important limitation and that is that all the graphics load does not benefit from the powerful graphics card integrated in the M1 chips, but is rendered by software, without hardware acceleration. That means that in many scenarios there are serious limitations. Now, it is clear that this represents a very important advance. Many experts were behind its achievement to demonstrate that Linux can be used on these machines.

We assume that it will be a matter of time that the experience and the results improve.
