Oculus Rift won't support Macs because its GPU isn't powerful enough

Oculus Rift 2015

The current Macs, will not be able to support Oculus Rift technology, said the Oculus Rift CEO, Palmer Luckey during E3, in Los Angeles. Luckey confirmed that if Apple decides to put an emphasis on prioritizing performance, his company would support Macs.

Oculus VR, confirmed at the time that its release to the public would be only for windows, which left many Mac users wanting more, when it comes to VR support (Virtual Reality). Now, just over a month later, Oculus VR CEO Palmer Luckey, has shed more light on why Macs are not being supported by your company, and probably it will not be in the immediate future, neither.

Oculus Rift

Talking with IGN, in a live interview at E3 last week, Luckey said that his company's VR headsets, it just won't work on any Macbook that exists or is known to exist in the near future. Luckey is aware that many people own Apple hardware, especially when it comes to laptops, but simply put, GPUs just aren't powerful enough as to run the recommended specs for the Oculus Rift. Specifically, he said the following, in the E3 interview.

We are focusing on Windows. People have said, why don't you support Macs? I know many people have Macs. And it's true, many people have Apple hardware, especially laptops. But the GPUs in them, they are not even close, to what we are needing, for our minimum recommended specification.

It's not all doom and gloom, although, as Luckey confirmed that if Apple decides to put an emphasis on prioritizing performance, your company I would support Macs new. Oculus VR, you definitely want to support it. When Apple prioritizes performance, Oculus Rift will be there. Furthermore Luckey also said, that this trend is not likely to change in the short term, mainly because Apple has not prioritized the performance of its machines for the near future.

So according to them the vast majority of Windows laptops have better graphics performance than MacBook?
Windows is not a bad system. The problem has always been the manufacturers who put it in trinkets of both desktop and laptop computers, which offer nothing but glitches. This is why they are almost always on sale and at ridiculous prices, and they perform extremely poorly; even on mid-range equipment that I have tested. More now with the proliferation of Atom processors in order to pull the public by offering them a tablet that is also a "complete computer".

    Who are they kidding?

Strongly agree Carl. I think they would have to look at them first, if their product doesn't consume too much resources. Because if it can be expensive to buy an Oculus Rift, if you need a very powerful computer, as they ask, in the end you get the crazy price.

This means that it is not for a normal user, because buying a powerful PC, of the characteristics that they put, they are doing some approximate mental calculations, of about 1500, so that it performs well and does not get hot.

      Regards Carl

They do not talk about software performance, they talk based on hardware and it may be that Macs have a much more optimized OS than Windows and that they do not need a lot of GPU to have excellent stability but at the Hardware level it leaves much to be desired, at the In the end, Windows PCs that can use this technology would only be the High-End

I am not an expert but if this throws a lot on the GPU what will happen to the games? What a living off the GPU! If that requires so much power, won't it detract from the graphic quality? They will not have to lower the quality of the game in the menu so that it does not hang or slow down, is it etc? That or have € 1500 just for a graphics card.
Not to mention that a gamer of those who spend hours (and are potentially buyers) and cannot or should not use it for a long time because of not being blind!

iMac with a 5-inch Retina 27K display, which costs between € 2300 and € 2700, does not have that gpu ?. They are my doubts about that statement.

And because they don't optimize the device so that it doesn't consume so much gpu, haha

The same thing said to Carl, because they have not optimized the Oculus.
      Greetings Andrés.

I own a 5K iMac with Radeon R9 M295X 4 Gb. I can guarantee that the Oculus Rift works perfectly. A few months ago they left me a Development Kit and under BootCamp I was able to test it without any problem.

That being said, I understand that if they make decent drivers and the computer has the proper hardware to make it work, the same as a PC. I don't think there would be a problem in supporting Oculus on Mac, natively.

Good contribution, I had doubts about everything in that iMac, and you have confirmed it.
