In this last year we have been able to verify how Apple has evolved storage systems from exclusive designs of SSD over SATA bus up to the most modern onboard and upgradeable SSDs (depending on the Mac model) via the PCIe bus, much faster in both sustained read and write rates.

However, they will not be the only ones who can offer an update or replacement of this type of disk, but the OWC company already has ready to put on sale its own models compatible with this type of SSD and expressly designed for both the latest MacBook Air, MacBook Pro Retina as well as the brand new Mac Pro.

The controller chosen for these disks will be the new one SandForce SF3700 in x2 and x4 versions integrating Toshiba NAND memory in 19nm although it is possible that they continue to buy NAND from the company Micron. For now, it is planned that they will be put on sale in production as such during the third quarter of the year, since at the moment the 'mass' production of this type of discs would be more expensive to offer to the consumer than what the company could offer. own Apple.

In any case, the need for debug firmware of the unit so that it works correctly on the different equipment for which it is intended, therefore those of you who thought about updating your Mac from mid-2013 onwards with greater storage capacity than what you bought at the time, you will still have to wait still a while since currently no other option is offered to do it through third parties.
