OWC Releases Mercury Helios FX 650 eGPU with Thunderbolt 3 and Upgradable

These days one of the most important fairs in the technological world is being held, such as the CES 2019. Many manufacturers attend this event, some to present their news, others like Apple, to see the evolution of the competition.

In any case, Mac users are attentive to know what type of accessories or hardware compatible with our computers are released, to know their characteristics and see if it may interest us. This is the case of the new OWC eGPU, which is called Mercury HeliosFX650 and incorporates many new features compared to its predecessor, and that we now present to you.

The model in question is a black box, with aesthetic characteristics similar to a small CPU. It connects with our Mac through the Thunderbolt 3 port. The first improvement we find is an improvement in the power supply, this being more powerful than previous versions, making it compatible with any Mac model. That is, we can completely dispense with our power to the Mac, if we have the OWC eGPU connected, by providing up to 100 W.

The second important point of the Mercury Helios FX 650 is the ability to update the graph that is inside. Today it is fully upgradeable for almost any model. So don't worry if you need more graphics power in the future. On the other hand, we can connect the OWD box to practically any monitor, since we have output for a HDMI display, by DisplayPort or DVI.

The operation of this eGPU is similar to the previous ones, in terms of loudness. It has single fan, which in tests is powerful enough. It remains idle if the workload is low. As for the construction of the box, it uses recyclable materials, taking care of the environment now and when its useful life is over. It is possible to buy this eGPU for $ 399 with a standard graph, reaching the $ 549 if we have the Radeon RX 580 graphics. Prices in euros are not yet available.
