Since its arrival on the Mac App Store, Pixelmator has become one of the best tools to work with images comfortably and easily without having to resort to Photoshop. Currently we can find two versions, the normal and the Pro. The latter to add a new feature called ML Super Resolution.
This new function allows us to enlarge the size of any image maintaining the level of detail and sharpness, a very curious function that we have always seen in many series and police movies. Obviously, the level of detail can be kept up to a limit and is not infinite.
The ML Super Resolution function allows us to increase the resolution up to three times without the disorder of the displayed pixel being exaggerated. This new function is possible thanks to machine learning (Machine Learning) hence its name.
The algorithm used is capable of recognizing edges, texture and contours creating similar pixels that it interpolates. Though not able to recreate minute details, this feature recreates enough to reduce the bitmap appearance when a tiny image is enlarged.
Many image editing applications have mathematical functions that provide a similar result. Pixelmator uses a convolutional neural network which scans the image and creates multiple versions that they contain a wide range of details.
This function is available within the Image menu and to apply it, we just have to open the image we want to treat and select it. Depending on the power of our team, this function may take from a second to more than a minute, especially on older equipment that supports the Metal function.
Pixelmator Pro has a price in the Mac App Store of 43,99 euros, requires macOS 13.3 and a 64-bit processor.
