Plex launches new desktop app for macOS with option to view content offline

Plex interface

A few hours ago, Plex launched a new desktop application for macOS. Many are the novelties that this streaming content player brings. Among the most relevant news, we can now download content for offline viewing, which is perfect for watching series and movies where we don't have an internet connection.

Meanwhile, the company announced that until January 2020 will be updating Plex Media Player, with important news and other functions that disappear, such as support for HTPC for Mac connected to TV (something similar does Netflix). As an alternative, the Plex team recommends using the application of the 4th generation Apple TV.

So far the Plex application calls it "Synchronize", but now the term it uses is directly "Download", which is more predictable and easier to understand. Also, the location of this option is directly on the movie, making this option easier to access. The general impression of the desktop application is very similar to what we know from the Apple TV. In this way, our learning curve for this new interface is shorter.

However, the possibility of downloading content is in the option of subscription. We must have PlexPass to use the content download function. On the other hand, we have to run at least the version 1.16.3 on both Plex Media Server and the Plex client.

We found no other significant features in this initial desktop release. However, although it does not detail any features, it tells us that it plans to introduce new features in subsequent updates until January 2020. You may be waiting to see all the news that Apple presents in macOS Catalina to take full advantage of the interaction of Apple software with the Plex app. We can download from this moment the Plex update, which is used for macOS Sierra 10.12 or later with an update date of August 15, 2019.
