Portrait mode comes to the iPhone 7 Plus with the beta of iOS 10.1

As we told you in Applelizados, yesterday afternoon Apple released the first beta for developers of iOS 10.1, the next update of Apple's new mobile operating system for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. And although at first it seemed that this preliminary version was limited to the classic bug fixes and improvements to the general stability of the system, shortly after it was discovered that it included a novelty already announced during the last Keynote on September XNUMX.

The new beta of iOS 10.1 includes the new camera mode "Portrait" for users of the iPhone 7 Plus, whose launch could not be made simultaneously with the sale of the terminal for not being prepared. The new Portrait mode is designed to mimic the kind of depth of field in photos that can be taken with a high-end DSLR camera., showing a foreground object that stands out against a blurred background.

iOS 10.1 beta launches the new Portrait mode emulating SLR cameras

Two weeks after being announced during the Keynote for iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2, and one week after the official launch of the new iOS 10 mobile operating system, the new Portrait mode is now available for the iPhone 7 Plus, although at the moment only developers will be able to enjoy it through the first beta version of iOS 10.1.

Portrait mode is about taking a photograph in which the object of attention is highlighted against a background that is blurred or blurred. To achieve this finish, Apple's integrated image signal processor scans the scene, using machine learning techniques to recognize the people in the image. From there, a depth map of the image is created from the two cameras included in the iPhone 7 Plus, keeping people in focus while applying a blur effect to the rest of the image that appears in the background.

If we compare the image above and below these lines, we can see the difference between a photograph taken in the usual way, and the same photograph obtained through the new Portrait mode of iOS 10.1 on the iPhone 7 Plus.

According to TechCrunch, Apple's new Portrait mode is based on the technology acquired after the purchase of the LinX company. The "Portrait" mode uses the 56mm lenses to capture the image, while the wide angle lens collects the perspective data to build that depth map and divide the image into layers.

This new feature, exclusive to the iPhone 7 Plus because it is the only model that incorporates the double camera, emulates the effect achieved with a high-end DSLR camera. It was not ready for the launch of the iPhone 7 Plus however, Apple promised to introduce it later, something that has happened with the launch of the first beta of iOS 10.1 for developers.

The guys at MacRumors have already gotten down to work and have been able to test the benefits of this new Portrait mode that undoubtedly, together with the rest of the features included in the camera, constitute one of the great incentives for the acquisition of the iPhone 7 Plus .

Portrait mode is still in full beta testing phase and apparently, there are some details that Apple has yet to polish.

According to the company, its use is really simple, since the new mode is next to the rest of the camera options such as "1: 1", "Video" or "Panoramic". Thus, users only have to select this mode by sliding left or right, point and shoot. Even includes a preview on screen that allows us to see how the image will be before taking it.

Remember that the new Portrait mode is only available in the beta version of iOS 10.1 for developers, although probably in a matter of days, perhaps this week, it will be released for users registered in the public beta program.
