Quicktime stuck and you can't save your last recording

Have you ever been on your nerves when recording a video or audio with Quicktime and see what fails when you want to save it? This has happened to me today and before forcing the exit of the application I have searched and searched the network until I have found the solution that our friend Carlos from Faq-Mac has shared with his followers.

For those of you who are not aware of all the standard applications that come in the macOS system, Quicktime is an application that has existed since the beginnings of the Mac system and that allows us to play both video and audio.

Over the years this application has evolved and now it has become an application that not only lets us play files but also allows us to record audio and the latest video, being able to capture what happens on the Mac screen, iPhone, iPad or even the fourth generation Apple TV if we connect it with a USB-C cable to our Mac.

Well, the case that today I want to tell you is that today I have been making a recording of the Apple TV screen and when I finished making it and stopped the recording I have arranged to save the file and what has been my surprise that Quicktime did not respond to me and therefore my recording was in danger.

It is clear that a quick way to get Quicktime to listen to me again is to force quit the application, but doing that what I was going to get was also losing the job I had recorded. Well then I will tell you what I put into practice so as not to lose the recording.

Follow these steps:

  • Quicktime saves your footage until it is permanently saved to a temporary file at the following location:

~ / Library / Containers / com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX / Data / Library / Autosave Information /

  • In that location you will have to look for a file like this:

Quicktime Player document not saved

The file I'm talking about is not the video you want to recover, but a container for it, so in order to access the recording and save it in a safe place, you will have to right-click and Show package contents.

Inside the package you have the file, in my case .mov to be able to copy and save it. Once safe you can force the exit of Quicktime.

Thank you Pedro. Perfect explanation and perfect solution to QuickTime crash problem.
In MacOS 10.14.6 everything usually goes very well, but sometimes some strange things happen. Apart from this QuickTime crash, sometimes the Finder itself crashes, does not respond, and you have to restart it by pressing Command + Alt + Esc. But if something was being done, if you were working on a project, a document not yet saved, had captured images and were still on the desktop, or multimedia issues, everything is lost. Maybe everything happens for some reason that I do not know. Thanks again. Pablo

    Thank you.
I have lost several screen recordings because in the end it tells me that it cannot find it and I have to force exit. Now recover a recording of 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Good method to be honest, but sadly it did not record everything, almost 10 minutes of the hour I only record audio, it is a pity that not much can be recorded. 🙁
