The iMac is a piece of design as well as an excellent desktop computer, it is not by chance that it has become one of the most iconic elements of Apple, with its front completely clean of cables, ports or buttons. But that has a price, and that is connecting something to its rear ports is sometimes a skill move.
We have tested one of the solutions that Satechi offers us with its USB-C Clamp HUB Pro, a hub that connected to a single USB-C port on your iMac offers up to six front connection ports, and it does so by taking maximum care of the design of your iMac.
Specifications and design
This Satechi HUB is specifically designed for use with an iMac, specifically with the new 2017 models that include the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports on the back of the computer. It is made of aluminum, so it looks like one more element of our iMac, and we have it available in the same two colors that we can buy our iMac: space gray and silver. The sensation when taking the Satechi HUB is very different from that of other similar devices that I have been able to try, somewhat cheaper but instead made of plastic. It looks solid sturdy and fits well on our iMac.
Available two card slots (SD and microSD), three USB 3.0 ports, and one USB-C port It doesn't support Power Delivery, so it doesn't work to charge your iPad, your MacBook or fast-charge your iPhone. The specifications of the front ports are not the fastest that technology allows, but for that we have the rear ports of the iMac, and we can leave the front ports for occasional connections that do not require the speed of a Thunderbolt 3 either.
Clean and simple fixing system
Something fundamental when we use an accessory of this type is that You must take care of the aluminum surface of our iMac, without leaving any type of mark, or worse, scratching it. Attachment is done through the ventilation slots along the entire bottom edge of the iMac, with tabs that are controlled via the swivel wheel on the back of the HUB. Fitting or removing it takes a minute. We have margin when it comes to being able to place it more to the left or right, but little, since the connection cable is short, so it should always go on the right side (as we look at it) of our computer.
The fixation is stable, the device does not move or fall, but to insert any USB memory we will have to use both hands, since the screen of our iMac does move, so doing it with one hand is almost something impossible. The connection is stable, the devices are perfectly fixed and there are no disconnects to interfere with file transfers. A small LED right next to the USB-C indicates that the HUB is connected to your iMac.
