Set differential privacy in Safari on the new macOS High Sierra

MacOS High Sierra

As I already mentioned in the previous article that I shared with you about the control of videos and audios of automatic reproduction in Safari under the new macOS High Sierra, we return to the attack with a new functionality that Safari has under the hood and that surely many of you don't know. It is a way of working that has already been implemented in iOS since iOS 10 and that consists of analyzing the websites that we are visiting in order to give a better browsing experience.

This way of working is called differential privacy And it is that although we think that Apple saves data of what we are visiting, what it really saves are loading and browsing data, that is, the system knows if when we visit a website it loads very slowly, if you have a lot of images, if you consume resources, etc. It is a way of working like the one that has already been implemented in predictive text on the iPhone for quite some time.

All data collected they are anonymous and Apple doesn't have access to them. The system is learning from the navigation we do but not to know the websites we visit, that is why the differential privacy, what it saves is the browsing data, as we have anticipated, in terms of speeds and structures of the websites visited so that the system preloads them before we go to ask for it. Yes, It seems impossible but Apple's system programming has a certain artificial intelligence to perform this action.

The system is able to learn which pages impair user navigation and with it, pages that are slow or with too many ads or even pages that consume a lot of resources are preloaded. Well, this way of working can be activated or deactivated, for which you must follow the following steps:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Choose Security and privacy.
  3. Go to the Privacy tab.
  4. In the Analysis section, enable or disable the three boxes that exist.
