Shazam keeps the microphone always activated on our Mac, even if we close the application

Shazam lands on your Mac

Years ago, when mobile phones only allowed us to make calls or send text messages, if we wanted to find out the name of a song, we had no choice but to make a recording of it and listen to it over and over again to try to figure out on our own what song it was. Fortunately with the arrival of Shazam, this problem was solved, since we only had to open the application and thanks to the data connection of our devices, we can quickly find out what song we are listening to. Shazam is currently available on all mobile platforms as well as being available for both PC and Mac, as well as being compatible with the Apple Watch and device with Android Wear.

Patrick Wardle, a former NSA engineer who has met with Apple on more than one occasion to provide information on the security flaws he regularly finds in OS X, has discovered a new related flaw in OS X, but this time chance not with the operating system but with an application that we install on our Mac to identify songs. We are talking about Shazam, an application that even if we close it, continues to keep the microphone open, recording everything that happens near it.

But according to vice president of communications James Pearson, it is not a problem, but rather it is a function so that every time the user activates the application, don't take too long to activate the mic to detect the song, since if the time to open it is very long, it is likely that we will not have time to identify it.

According to Pearson, we are not talking about a privacy issue, since despite the microphone being on, the application does not process the information at any time unless it detects that it is a song. But this vulnerability can be used by friends from outside to try to sneak malware into the application, as has happened on several occasions to Transmission, with which someone on the other side can listen to all our conversations.
