The Apple Watch could detect if we are drowning

Apple Watch Series 5

To this day, no one doubts that the Apple Watch is the best smartwatch that we can find on the market today, thanks both to its design and its features and functions focused on the health, safety and well-being of users thanks to the heart rate sensor, irregular heart rate alerts, fall detector ...

A few days ago, we published an article that suggested that Apple could implement the technology necessary to detect if the user is about to have a panic attack. Today we are talking about another quite interesting function that could come to the Apple Watch, a function that Apple has patented and that shows a system for detect if user is drowning.

The Cupertino people have filed a new patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, a patent that explains the idea of determine if a smartwatch user is drowning. According to this patent, Apple would incorporate a new sensor in the Apple Watch that could detect the volume of water in the environment, being able to detect if we are standing still, if it is rainwater, if we have not fallen into the sea, into a pool ...

This patent talks about a sensor that could detect the difference between the volume of water. In addition, it would take information from our calendar to check if we planned to go diving or swimming on the agenda through an "anticipated context of use". This sensor would also be able to determine the properties of water, as well as its density or toxicity. As if that were not enough, it would also use the user's position to check if the user is in a river, pond, lake, sea to determine the steps to follow.

With all this data, the Apple Watch could determine if user is safe. If this is not the case, it would make a call to the nearby emergency services sending them the user's location. As we can see, there are many factors that the device would have to analyze in order to reach the reliable conclusion that the user is drowning.

Being a patent, does not mean that at some point this function can see the light, but at least it is interesting to see how Apple continues to work on improving the functions it offers us through the Apple Watch.
